In the first match of CSA T20 Challenge, Knights defeated Warriors by 8 wickets and sealed top spot in the points table. Batting first, Warriors scored 153 runs in 120 balls. With the help of players, who batted well in top order of batting lineup, Knights registered its first victory in this domestic cricket competition going on in South Africa.
After winning the toss, Knights opted to bowl first. Opener batsmen of Warriors stepped into the field to kick off the first inning. JJ Smuts and Gihahn Cloete scored double digit individual runs while batting as opening batsmen. JJ Smuts, who is captain of Warriors team, scored 18 runs in 17 balls. His companion made 19 runs in 14 balls.
The two cricketers lost their wickets in initial phase of the game. Colin Ingram and Colin Ackermann were the men to bat next. Unfortunately, both players could not perform well in this match and returned to pavilion after scoring single digit runs. Ingram scored 5 runs in 7 balls while Ackermann scored 2 runs in 5 balls.
Christiaan Jonker arrived on the ground to perform next. He was accompanied by Jerry Nqolo at the other end of strike. Jonker started hitting runs with speedy approach. Hitting 4 sixes and 4 fours, Jonker completed his half century. Meanwhile, Nqolo lost his wicket after scoring 6 runs in 8 balls and Solo Nqweni replaced him as the next batsman.
Nqweni accompanied Jonker in scoring runs for their team. Hitting 1 four, Nqweni scored 16 runs in 16 balls and lost his wicket in 16th over of the match. Sisanda Magala came to bat next, but returned to pavilion without scoring a single run. Jonker lost his wicket in 19th over and players who batted after him failed to score huge runs for the team.
First inning of the match ended with Warriors scoring 153 runs in 20 overs with the loss of 9 wickets. Knights’ bowler Shadley van Schalkwyk picked up three wickets while his teammates Marchant de Lange and Eddie Leie took two wickets each. Aubrey Swanepoel grabbed one wicket while other bowlers went wicketless in this match.
Knights started the run-chase with poor beginning. Opener batsmen Grant Mokoena and Patrick Kruger lost their wickets in early stage of the game. Mokoena scored 9 runs in 10 balls while Kruger made 2 runs in 4 balls. Team’s captain Theunis de Bruyn and David Miller entered into the field to bat next.
Partnership between the duo not only took team’s total score beyond triple digit figure but also helped the team in attaining victory in the match. Smashing 6 sixes and 3 fours, Bruyn scored 78 runs in 48 balls. Left handed Miller too left no stone unturned in hitting powerful shots. Hitting 3 sixes and 7 fours, Miller scored 62 runs in 47 balls. Knights successfully chased the target in 18 overs.
Knights is scheduled to confront with Titans in its upcoming cricket match in CSA T20 Challenge. The T20 match is about to be played on 15th November at Diamond Oval, Kimberley. Warriors will be up against Titans in its next match on 17th November at Buffalo Park, East London.
