Defeating Cape Cobras by 15 runs, Dolphins won the 2nd match of ongoing CSA T20 Challenge 2017. Batting first, Dolphins scored 231 runs in 120 balls. Due to the hindrance of rain, second inning was reduced to ten overs. Cobras had to score 123 runs to win the game. The team failed to chase the target and lost its opening match in this edition of CSA T20 Challenge.
Cape Cobras won the toss and elected to bowl first. Opener batsmen of Dolphins gave a thrilling start to the first inning. Opening players Sarel Erwee and Morne van Wyk started scoring runs with speedy approach. Hitting 1 six and 3 fours, Wyk scored 19 runs in 7 balls. He was caught out in hands of Qaasim Adams in 3rd over of the inning.
Dabe Vilas came to bat next after Wyk’s dismissal in the early phase of match. Vilas hit 6 fours to score 32 runs in 21 balls and lost his wicket in tenth over of the match. Khaya Zondo replaced him as the next batsman and played crucial role in setting up huge target for the rival team. Zondo hit 4 fours and 4 sixes to score 67 runs in 34 balls.
Sarel Erwee was strong at the other end of strike. Hitting 10 sixes and 5 fours, Erwee scored 103 runs in 58 balls and made a vital contribution in taking his team’s total score beyond 200 runs. First inning ended with Dolphins scoring 231 runs in 20 overs with the loss of two wickets.
Cape Cobras’ bowlers Mthiwekhaya Nabe and Vernon Philander picked up one wicket each. Due to rain, the second inning was reduced to 10 overs as per DLS rule. Cobras began the run-chase with stuttering start. After scoring 7 runs in 7 balls, opener batsman Richard Levi lost his wicket in the 2nd over. Temba Bavuma batted next, but soon returned to pavilion after scoring 6 runs in 4 balls.
Right handed batsman Hashim Amla was playing beautifully at the other end of strike. Team’s captain Jean Paul Duminy, who batted next after Bavuma lost his wicket in 3rd over, could not score much runs and walked back to pavilion after scoring 1 run in 3 balls. Aviwe Mgijima was the man to bat next. Partnership between Amla and Aviwe took their team’s overall score to new level.
Smashing 4 sixes and 3 fours, Amla completed his half century and remained not out after scoring 52 runs in 27 balls. Hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes, Amla’s companion Aviwe scored 37 runs in 19 balls. The two players tried their hard to reduce the gap between required runs and balls left to score the runs. Efforts of duo could not paid off and their team lost the match.
